Plantain chips

Plantain chips in a small basket

Crunchy, savory, and satisfying - that's what you get with these vegan plantain chips. Made from plantains and baked to crispy perfection, they're a great snack for any time of day. Whether you're vegan or just looking to switch up your snack options, these plantain chips are sure to satisfy your cravings.

These chips are not fried but baked but you can certainly drop them into a fryer (probably an air fryer too but I haven’t tried). You can also play around with the seasonings, the options are limitless.

One thing to note though is that you want to select plantains that are green, instead of yellow. They will have less moisture and will hold better when you slice them. I would suggest using a food processor with the slicing disk on and in just a few second you have your plantain sliced and ready to go. Of course, you can also use a mandoline slicer if you like - I don’t ; my mom had a small accident with a mandoline a few years back and I cannot even look at one of these anymore - it’s also perfect for the job but be careful!

You don’t want to slice the plantain too thick because they will take forever to cook and will be chewy inside nor too thin otherwise they might burn in the oven.

In less time than it takes to write a blog post, you should have your plantain chips roasting in your oven - easy peasy!

Plantain chips (vegan and gluten-free)

Ingredients:

  • 2 green plantains

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or coconut oil

  • 1 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon lime zest

  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder

  • Cayenne, pepper, paprika…

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 365°F (180°C).

  2. Peel the plantains and slice them into thin rounds using a food processor or a mandoline slicer.

  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the olive oil, sea salt, spices, lime zest, and garlic powder. Add the sliced plantains and toss until they're evenly coated.

  4. Arrange the plantain slices in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  5. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until the chips are golden brown and crispy - keep an eye on them as you might want to turn them over so that they are crispy on both sides.

  6. Remove from the oven and let them cool for a few minutes before serving.

Now that you've got your plantain chips, you can pair them with some delicious dips or toppings such as guacamole, hummus, a kidney bean dip or a Guadeloupean “sauce chien”. More on the later soon!
